Buying a Yacht in Montenegro: Taxes, Berths and Paperwork

Montenegro is one of the most yacht-friendly jurisdictions in the Adriatic — competitive VAT, straightforward flagging, and a berth network anchored by Porto Montenegro. Here is the framework our brokerage walks buyers through.

Flagging your yacht

Yachts under 24m register through the Maritime Safety Authority in Bar. Larger vessels commonly stay under a EU flag while berthing in Montenegro; our team handles the paperwork either way.

VAT and import

Montenegro's VAT is 21%. Vessels imported from EU waters may benefit from temporary admission of up to 18 months — critical when planning cross-border cruising.

Berths

Porto Montenegro, Portonovi and Lustica Bay operate independent long-term berth registries. We help buyers secure a berth before closing — a berth is often the harder half of the transaction.

Running costs

Budget 8–12% of vessel value per year for berth, insurance, crew and maintenance. Our management arm can operate the yacht on your behalf and offset costs with selective charter.
