Inner Boka Bay

Perast & Our Lady of the Rocks

A small baroque town beneath Mount Sveti Ilija with two islets offshore: Our Lady of the Rocks, an artificial island built up over centuries, and St George, a natural islet with a Benedictine monastery.

The town

Perast is a compact waterfront of baroque palaces and churches, car-free along the promenade, and part of the UNESCO-listed Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor.

The two islets

Our Lady of the Rocks is man-made: according to local tradition it was built up over centuries by sailors dropping stones and scuttling boats around a rock. It carries a church and a small museum, and landing is straightforward.

St George, the neighbouring islet, is a private monastery island and is not open to visitors — you cruise past it.

Practicalities

Allow 45–60 minutes ashore including the church and museum. Perast is a natural first or last stop on any inner-bay itinerary from Kotor or Tivat.
